SelfNeuron vs Mem.ai: Two AI-Native Second Brains Compared

Two AI-native second brains, built on different bets about where your knowledge should live.

Two AI-native PKM tools — what's actually different between them

Quick verdict: Mem.ai and SelfNeuron share a similar philosophy — AI should do the organising for you. The differences are meaningful: Mem is VC-backed and has been reducing features; SelfNeuron is founder-led and actively building. Mem is more expensive with fewer integrations. SelfNeuron leads on privacy, pricing, and long-term roadmap stability.

What Mem.ai Actually Is

Mem launched as one of the first AI-native note-taking apps. Its key promise — automatic linking and AI-powered search without manual organisation — mirrors SelfNeuron's core value proposition. Mem attracted significant VC backing and grew a passionate user base among early adopters.

The concern with Mem is trajectory. Multiple features have been removed or paywalled. The pricing has been revised upward. Users in communities like r/PKMS and r/productivity have noted increasing instability and reduced product investment. For a tool that holds your personal knowledge base, long-term reliability matters.

The Key Difference: Stability and Privacy

Mem.ai is VC-backed — which means their priorities are shaped by investor return timelines, not user longevity.

SelfNeuron is a solo-founder product — which means the person building it is also using it daily, and your feedback directly shapes the roadmap.

For something that holds your personal knowledge base, this matters. You want the tool to still exist in 3 years.

CHOOSE MEM.AI IF…

You are already invested in the Mem ecosystem, value its AI auto-linking, and are comfortable with the VC-backed trajectory and higher price point.

CHOOSE SELFNEURON IF…

You want AI-native PKM at a lower price, with stronger privacy commitments, and a founder you can reach directly if something isn't working.
